Think jazz is your grandad's thing? Spoiler: it's not. This autumn Madrid fills up with concerts ranging from elegant classics to the wildly experimental, with mash-ups you won't see coming.
JazzMadrid26 is the city's international jazz festival and it runs for almost two months: from 2 October to 30 November. Over a hundred concerts across theatres and music venues, with shows blending jazz with flamenco, electronic music and African rhythms.
Who's playing?
The line-up mixes legends and young talent. Some of this year's names:
- Kurt Elling & The Yellowjackets
- Paquito D'Rivera Trio
- Cécile McLorin Salvant & Sullivan Fortner
- David Murray Quartet
- Rita Payés & Lucía Fumero
- Moisés P. Sánchez and Marco Mezquida
Each concert's date is in the programme on the official website.

Tips to enjoy it
- Start with a small venue. At places like Clamores or Villanos the musicians are two metres away. Totally different vibe.
- Foolproof date plan. Concert, then dinner in the centre. You're welcome.
- Check the programme calmly. There are concerts almost every week until late November, so squeeze one in between exams.
- Keep an open mind. Don't know anyone on the line-up? Even better: discoveries are the best part.
